Hearts, Thorns, Peace

(The original) Mothers’ Day Proclamation for Peace
By Julia Ward Howe

Abolitionist, peace activist, nurse, feminist, poet, author
1870

Arise, all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be that of water or of tears! Say firmly: “We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies, our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.

“Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”

From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own. It says, “Disarm, disarm! The sword is not the balance of justice.” Blood does not wipe out dishonor nor violence indicate possession.

As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each learning after his own time, the sacred impress, not of Caesar, but of God.

In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.

Nootka Rose

A teaching on receptivity

I held myself so firm, so strong
Muscles and tendons and bones and fascia and heart and lungs

Then something said “Soften”
Inner voice, outer voice
If all is One what does it matter my perception

Despite my knowing
I relinquished
Or
Was relinquished

Into a great softening

Where the firm and strong and tender and receptive heart
Could truly work
Actually love

Hawthorn blossoms, May 1, right on time

First text today:

She told me she could see that I put my whole heart into mothering
And I got that tingly tickle above my nose
Under my eyes
As the tears came up
So I know it’s true
Filled my lower lids
Then receded.

Anyway, it touched me.
What else would I do with a whole heart?
What passes for a whole heart

I like to think it is whole in that way
the Japanese artist repairs the broken vase
Tree sap mixed with gold
And if a piece is missing
Completes the redemption with more golden sap

Yes my whole heart.

Devil’s Club or rather, All-Heal or Qwa’pulhp or Xadi’ats depends on your relationship to the land, I guess. That is for another essay.

Always I am
Drawn to the thorns
Hawthorn, Rose, Devil’s Club
Protection
Not wall or fortress
Reminders
Move with care
Shelter tender things
Slowing down helps.

Sometimes we need to ask to work with Thorn medicine. Some of us need this more than others of us do. You know who you are.
Here is an exercise you can try if you want to:
Visualize, sense or imagine a beautiful protective encasing of thorns surrounding your whole body.
The thorns face outward. You are protected by them. Rest here.
When you are ready, envision your Heart opening like a flower blossom.
Taking as much time as you need and want, allow your Heart to open fully within the shield and shelter of the thorny cocoon.
Pay attention to your Heart.
And then release the exercise when you are finished. Go on with your day.
